KRESGE FOUNDATION AWARDS $300,000 GRANT TO MERCY PRIMARY CARE CENTER
Health Clinic Opportunity grant to expand access to care for 240 more uninsured at Detroit free clinic
Detroit, Mich. (January 6, 2010) - Mercy Primary Care Center of Detroit (MPCC) has recently received a grant award of $300,000 over two years from the Kresge Foundation’s Health Clinic Opportunity Fund to expand access to health care for the uninsured in metro Detroit. With this funding, MPCC can expect to increase the amount of uninsured patients treated at the clinic by approximately 120 per year for two years. The grant will fund ancillary care services such as medical eye exams for diabetic patients, imaging, lab work, transportation and pharmaceuticals. Currently, MPCC limits open enrollment for new patients to four times per year. With the Kresge grant, the clinic will be able to take an additional 10 patients per month on a first come, first served call-in basis. MPCC’s next enrollment period begins on January 12. Residents are encouraged to call (313) 579-4000. MPCC, a continuing ministry of Novi-based Trinity Health, is a health center serving the needs of Detroit’s uninsured. The center’s mission is to provide a medical safety net for uninsured adults who require health care services to improve their quality of life. MPCC seeks to eliminate barriers to comprehensive care by providing laboratory, diagnostic testing, limited specialty care, health education, pharmaceuticals and transportation free of charge. MPCC treats the whole person-body, mind, and spirit-rather than an isolated ailment. In 2009, MPCC served 1,000 patients, providing nearly 5,000 patient visits.
