Holy Cross Health President and CEO Van Coots to Retire in January 2024
December 6, 2023
Trinity Health announced today that President and CEO of Holy Cross Health, Norvell “Van” Coots, MD, will retire in January 2024, ending a distinguished 25-year career in health care management and medical administration.
A retired Brigadier General, Dr. Coots has served as CEO of Trinity Health’s regional health system in Maryland for more than seven years. He established the Trinity Health Military and Veterans Healthcare Program to meet the specific needs of military service members, veterans, and their families. During the pandemic, Dr. Coots also served as a member of Governor Hogan’s COVID-19 Task Force and effectively led the health system through the COVID pandemic—with Holy Cross Health receiving Trinity Health’s first COVID patient in 2020.
“Leading Holy Cross Health has been one of the best experiences in my career, a true privilege,” said Dr. Coots. “Like millions of others, I face a personal battle with Type 2 diabetes as well as hypertension. The time has come for me to prioritize my health.”
Under his leadership, Holy Cross Health became a regional leader in comprehensive cancer care. Dr. Coots has also served as a six-year member of the Board of Trustees for the Maryland Hospital Association and as Chairman of Maryland Physicians Care. He was honored by SOAR! in 2022 as the recipient of the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Award for leadership and generosity in the Catholic community.
“While Van’s enthusiasm and spirit will be missed, I applaud his decision to prioritize his health,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Ben Carter. “We are grateful for all he has done for Holy Cross Health and Trinity Health.”
A search for the next President and CEO of Holy Cross Health will begin and an interim will be named in the coming weeks.
