Livonia, Michigan, January 7, 2021 — In a letter message to Trinity Health colleagues across 22 states, President and CEO Mike Slubowski today wrote:

Dear Trinity Health Colleagues,

I was shocked and saddened to witness the senseless violence and loss of life that occurred in Washington D.C. yesterday as Congress met to certify the results of the Electoral College. We pray for all who were harmed by this tragic moment.

As I’ve said many times during 2020, we are living in a time of four unprecedented challenges: first, a raging pandemic that has taken the lives of many people; second, an economic crisis; third, a social justice crisis as we address systemic racism; and fourth, a crisis that impacts the very soul of our democracy.

Last night and this morning, I reflected once again on our Mission for comfort. We are a faith-based ministry, and we are called, in the Spirit of the Gospel, to be a “transforming, healing presence” for the people and communities we serve.

I know that healing goes well beyond physical health and we provide the most personal of human services — body, mind and spirit — to those we serve. And I realize that even with the results of the Presidential election behind us as of early this morning, the divisions in our nation are wide and deep. I respect that even among our colleagues and families, there are differences in our beliefs regarding the role of government and our commitment to social and economic policies, by way of example.

But as a healing ministry, we must do our part to help our nation heal at this time. We have a higher purpose. And the way we heal is by coming together as one Trinity Health family and demonstrating our continuing commitment to serve others as we support the Common Good.

We have faced many challenges this past year, and we have sacrificed much — and yet we have persevered! We have cared for many people, providing holistic care and social support. Our communities are better off because of our presence. We still have much work to do to get through this pandemic by caring for our communities and for ourselves and our families. Wearing masks, physical distancing and avoiding crowds will continue to be paramount in order to stop the spread. And there is light at the end of the tunnel as we ramp up our capabilities to vaccinate our colleagues and our communities.

Together, we can be the light for the world if we maintain our faith in God, our love of family, friends and neighbors, stay healthy, remain optimistic, and continue our commitment to serve others. We are doing sacred work.

I am grateful for all of you! And I have faith and confidence that we can do our part to support the healing of our nation as we move forward. We will make 2021 a year of faith, hope and love as we join as one Trinity Health family.

Peace to you all.
