Trinity Health supports the recent bipartisan solution to curb gun violence and those impacted by it, inclusive of enhanced background checks for young people, financial support to implement state red flag laws, community-based violence prevention initiatives, and expanded access to behavioral health services. I applaud the U.S. Senate for its action and urge the U.S. House of Representatives to act quickly to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

Every day, Trinity Health and health systems across the country see the impact and trauma of gun violence firsthand. In 2020, gun-related injuries led to 45,222 fatalities, an increase of nearly 15% over the previous year. Gun-related injuries have now surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death of our children (ages 1-19). Gun violence is a national public health crisis.

Trinity Health's core value of safety calls us to seek a culture that prevents harm and nurtures a safe environment for all. One way Trinity Health is addressing gun violence is through effective community-based violence interventions like the Hartford Communities That Care partnership at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut. This hospital-based violence intervention program connects shooting victims and their families with medical, mental health and social support services. More than 1,800 gunshot victims have availed themselves of the program. Trinity Health has also released a new policy card to federal, state and local leaders.

We must confront the violence that is increasingly affecting individuals, health care workers and our communities. Passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a critical step forward. Together, we can protect and improve the health of the communities we serve while caring for the common good.
