June 30, 2019LIVONIA, MICHIGAN – July 1, 2019 – Trinity Health, one of the nation's largest Catholic health systems, has a new president and chief executive officer today as Michael Slubowski, FACHE, FACMPE, begins his tenure in the role.
Slubowski takes the helm of the 22-state, 92-hospital system having already begun establishing a strong foundation for the system's future. In his prior position as president and chief operating officer, Slubowski focused on implementing the organization’s strategy, integrating local, regional and national teams, and advancing efforts to ensure that people, processes, IT systems and resources are in place to support successful operations.
"Our Board of Directors is delighted to welcome Mike as president and CEO," said James Bentley, Ph.D., chair of the Trinity Health Board of Directors. "In the two years Mike served as the system's chief operating officer, his astute leadership style, personal authenticity and complete ownership of the Trinity Health mission proved him a purposeful and effective leader of both people and processes; we look forward to seeing the system's accomplishments under his direction."
In a system-wide announcement, Slubowski reaffirmed Trinity Health's ongoing commitment to high-value care and to transforming the health of communities and populations. He also announced some immediate priorities related to improving patients' experience of care and accelerating the system's adoption of common platforms.
“Trinity Health's 129,000 colleagues serve with an unwavering commitment to its mission," said Slubowski. "I am honored to serve as their president and CEO and feel truly privileged to lead this compassionate and transforming Catholic health ministry as we work, single-heartedly, in the best interests of the people and communities we serve."
The announcement that Slubowski would become the national health system's next chief executive at the beginning of the next fiscal year was made in December 2018, along with news that Richard J. Gilfillan, M.D., would depart the role at the end of fiscal year 2019.
Prior to returning to Trinity Health as president and COO in May 2017, Slubowski served as president and CEO of SCL Health, where he had a seven-year record of health system innovation and transformation, leading its ministry of 12 hospitals, multiple other facilities and 15,000 employees in three states. Before SCL Health, he worked at Trinity Health as president of hospital and health networks for the system and, previously, held executive leadership positions at health systems in Michigan and Arizona, including Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan; Samaritan Health Services in Phoenix, Arizona; and Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan.
Slubowski, the immediate past-Chair of the Catholic Health Association, holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in business administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He also completed advanced health care leadership training through an Advanced Leadership Institute conducted by the University of Michigan's School of Business and sponsored by the National Center for Healthcare Leadership.
